Chinese COVID-19 team beat corgi to death with iron rod, video shows

A pet corgi was beaten to death by COVID-19 prevention workers Friday while the owner was in quarantine, video shared by the owner shows.

The dog’s owner, only known as Ms. Fu, said she was ordered to quarantine just after midnight Friday morning when a case of COVID-19 was discovered at her housing complex. Around 4:40 p.m., she witnessed her pet dog being attacked by the workers, with one armed with an iron rod, on her security camera app. She had asked for multiple assurances that disinfection staff would leave her dog alone if she left it at home, according to the Wall Street Journal.

“I already did everything they asked me to,” Fu said. “I have no idea what happened to him.”

Fu said she begged the workers to stop through a speaker embedded in the camera, but the workers kept beating the dog. She heard the dog crying off-camera and later saw the workers carrying a yellow bag away after the whimpers stopped, she continued. Blood could be seen on the ground afterward, the outlet reported.

District officials in Shangrao, where Fu lives, said workers carried out “biosafety disposal” procedures in the house “amid imperfect communication” with Fu. There is no indication the dog was tested for COVID-19 before it was killed, the outlet added.
