Alabama coach Nick Saban announces COVID-19 diagnosis after earlier false positive

On Wednesday, University of Alabama football coach Nick Saban has tested positive for COVID-19 a second time, just days before a game with rival Auburn University.

“He has very mild symptoms, so this test will not be categorized as a potential false positive,” said Dr. Jimmy Robinson, Alabama medical director, and Jeff Allen, head football athletic trainer. “He will follow all appropriate guidelines and isolate at home.”

Saban tested positive for COVID-19 in October, but it was deemed inaccurate when he tested negative in three subsequent tests. Robinson gave Saban the green light to coach Alabama’s winning game against the University of Georgia.

He told reporters in October that he was “fortunate” that it was a false positive and that “it should be a lesson that I can share.”

“Once they tell you you’re positive, there’s nothing you can do about it,” Saban said. “I would encourage everybody out there to do everything they can to practice social distancing and wear a mask and manage their personal space so they don’t have to ever hear the fact that you have this.”
