Feminist group annoyed about vote to ban the word ‘feminist’

Feminist Majority, a feminist organization (if you couldn’t tell), is unhappy with the fact that Time Magazine included the word “feminist” in its annual list of words to ban.

The group points out that a lot of words and phrases were included, but it only took issue with the word “feminist.”

“‘Feminist’ is an important word, not a meme,” the group wrote on its website. “In fact, millions of women and men around the world like you who believe in the social, economic, and political equality of all women identify as ‘feminist’ — including Taylor Swift, who is currently on TIME’s cover.”

The group further claims it is Time that has a problem.

“If TIME is annoyed with a word that represents saving women’s lives, fighting for equality, and ending violence against women, then there’s something wrong with TIME — and not with the word ‘feminist.’”

Maybe that’s not the part of “feminist” that Time’s online voters have a problem with — maybe they have a problem with the negative attitudes that feminists and feminist groups constantly display. Like, for example, getting angry over a word.

For the moment, feminist is winning the (very unscientific) poll hands down. More than 50 percent of respondents have chosen “feminist” as the word they want banned, over alternatives such as “bae,” “turnt,” and “bossy.”

The word “kale” is also on the ballot. Kale advocates haven’t written in yet to express their annoyance.
