Bonnie Koerner and her husband, Robert, were a little skeptical at first about moving into a 55-and-over community. But when they saw Gatherings at Forest Glen in Anne Arundel County’s Piney Orchard, they fell in love and decided to take the plunge.
“I thought, ‘Oh no, I’m going to be joining a bunch of old people,” said Bonnie, who’s “just over” the age of 55. “But it isn’t like that at all. Everyone gets along great. There are a lot of ‘young’ old people here.”
And they’re all living in spiffy new two-bedroom, two-bathroom condos. Some of the units include a den, and they range in size from 1,400 to 1,900 square feet. Each condo is housed in one of seven four-story buildings that comprise the development.
“They’re designed for an open floor plan with living room-dining room combos and large kitchens,” said Diana Van Stone, vice president of sales and marketing for Beazer Homes. “They have tray ceilings, walk-in closets, large bathrooms; a couple of designs have a sitting room off the master [bedroom].”
They all come with a personal one-car garage, which has been a big hit among the residents.
“The first floor is made up of three condo units and the rest is portioned into garages,” Van Stone said. “It’s been very popular because people like the privacy and safety aspect.”
Forest Glen is located about 10 minutes from Interstate 97, near Routes 100 and 32. Piney Orchard Marketplace, with its restaurants and shops, is within walking distance.
“Anne Arundel County is a wonderful location,” Van Stone said. “It’s got lots of conveniences, shopping and restaurants. There’s a gas station right on the site. There’s a clubhouse where the residents can get together. They hold a lot of group activities, potluck suppers, playing cards.”
The Koerners moved into Forest Glen in January, and they haven’t looked back.
“We’re 55 and older, and we didn’t want any fuss or muss,” Bonnie said. “We looked at other places, but this had everything we were looking for. My daughters-in-law live nearby, so it makes it nice when they visit. We don’t have to fight over the grandchildren.”
