Biden says there’s no reason schools should be closed and flubs year during COVID-19 briefing

President Joe Biden reiterated his administration’s push to keep schools open despite rising coronavirus infections during a briefing with his COVID-19 task force Tuesday, at one point mistakenly expressing hope for 2020 instead of 2022.

As infections have skyrocketed in recent weeks amid the emergence of the omicron variant, officials have closed schools to in-person learning in some districts, while others have stayed open despite vocal opposition from teachers unions.

In his comments, Biden said that “schools can and should be open this winter,” adding that “we have all the tools to keep kids safe.”

The president urged the public to “take advantage” of the available COVID-19 remedies and mitigators, namely wearing masks and getting vaccinated, but also stumbled over his words, misstating the year in saying, “There’s a lot of reason to be hopeful in 2020.”
