I have no sympathy at all for the MS-13 gang leader who is complaining about his prison conditions in New York. And I don’t feel bad about it, either.
As Newsday reported on Monday, during a July 31 court hearing in Nassau county, Miguel Angel Corea Diaz complained that he faces “discrimination” by being kept in lockdown. Diaz’s lawyer, Scott Gross adds, “The conditions have been unbearable,” in part because Diaz only has “limited access to a phone.”
Give me a break.
First, Diaz has no cause for complaint. As Newsday notes, Diaz is accused not just of being a senior operational leader for MS-13 operations in the United States. He’s also accused of various conspiracies and in high-level drug trafficking activities. These activities explain why Diaz’s access to the general prison population and to regular telephone communication have been limited. MS-13’s reach in the Nassau county prison system is extensive. Were Diaz put alongside his compatriots, he could plot new crimes.
Second, Diaz is a hypocrite. After all, every day MS-13 is a scourge on the life of prisoners up and down the nation. They force younger inmates to commit crimes while in prison in order to avoid either being brutalized there or having their family members on the outside brutalized. The gang also uses violence to control prison dorms in furtherance of extortion and other criminal enterprises. Those are the facts.
Miguel Diaz might be complaining, but I say the court should ignore him.
