A new poll released Monday by Ipsos showed that a majority of Americans believe that sexism played a role in Hillary Clinton’s 2016 election loss.
The poll found that 21% said “gender and sexism played” a “major role” in Clinton’s loss, while 31% said it played a “small role.” Forty-nine percent said sexism played no role in her 2016 loss.
The results closely mirror the 2016 popular vote split between the two candidates, in which Clinton secured 48% of the popular vote and Trump received 46%.
The poll also examined whether respondents thought a “woman would have a harder time than a man running against Donald Trump in 2020.”
Fifteen percent of those polled strongly agreed, with 25% “somewhat” agreeing. Only 26% of those polled disagreed with the statement.
The majority polled believe their spouse and immediate family would be comfortable if a female president were elected.
