Broadneck to host state final games

The Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association relocated two state field hockey championship games after the original venue was vandalized.

The 4A and 2A finals were scheduled to be held Monday night at Broadneck High in Arnold, but had to be moved 12 miles southwest to South River High after the middle section of the school?s $800,000 artificial turf field was burned early Sunday morning. However, Broadneck school officials said the field should be repaired in time to host today?s 1A and 3A state finals.

“Things are going very well,” Broadneck spokesperson Maneka Wade said. “It will be repaired today, but unfortunately not in time for [Monday] evening.”

Last night’s field hockey championship games between Rising Sun and Century in the 2A final and Quince Orchard and Severna Park in the 4A bracket, were held at South River in Edgewater.

“We will be able to host the [Class] 1A and 3A championships tomorrow,” Wade said. “Things are going well and the field is being repaired as we speak.”

Broadneck is slated to host the girls? soccer finals on the same field on Thursday and Saturday.

Broadneck?s field is made of synthetic field turf, but South River?s is natural grass. The damage is to the field?s center emblem, a large maroon-colored “B.”

School spokesman Bob Mosier told The Examiner that it looked as if someone “poured something on part of [the field] and lit it on fire.”

“The police and the fire department are investigating the situation and trying to figure out who did this,” Wade said. “We don’t have any results [yet].”

Broadneck?s field was vandalized last year, causing the school to install video cameras. It is unknown what ? if anything ? the cameras captured.
