Thirty-one percent of Republicans favor the new deal, compared to 30 percent who oppose it, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll. Forty-percent are unsure — a crucial number for the Obama administration as it works to prove to lawmakers and Americans that the framework nuclear reached between Iran, the U.S., Britain, Russia, China, France and Germany is a good one.
Not all Democrats are the deal’s biggest fans, either.
Though 50 percent of Democrats favor the deal, 10 percent are opposed and 39 percent are unsure, the poll found,
Among the always important group of independent voters, 33 percent are in favor of the deal, 21 percent oppose it and 45 percent are unsure.
A sharp split among political parties was evident with other Iran issues. Sixty percent of Republicans think the U.S. should hold a hard line with Iran or expand current sanctions, compared with 23 percent of Democrats who said the same.
In addition, 18 percent of Republicans said Washington was right to improve diplomatic relations with the country, compared to 48 percent of Democrats.
The online poll of roughly 2,200 American adults was conducted April 3-7.
