GOP senator: Flynn’s resignation helps get focus back on security

Republican Sen. John Thune said Tuesday that the resignation of Mike Flynn as President Trump’s national security adviser is a positive step toward getting the focus back on the country’s national security issues.

The South Dakota senator said on CNN that Flynn acted inappropriately by speaking to the Russian ambassador to the U.S. before Trump took office, and then lying to Vice President Mike Pence about the topic of conversation. Flynn reportedly indicated to Ambassador Sergey Kislyak sanctions handed down by President Obama could be eased following Trump’s inauguration.

“I’m pleased action was taken,” Thune said. “Gen. Flynn resigned, President Trump was right to accept that resignation and now it’s time to go about the business of securing the nation.”

Thune said there are many unanswered questions, like what the White House knew about Flynn’s conversations and when did they know it. Reports indicate former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates warned about Flynn’s conversations with Russia last month, including a warning that he could be blackmailed by the Russians.

Thune said the White House needs to answer the relevant questions about Flynn’s connections to Russia and do an investigation.

“I don’t know the answer to that,” he said. “I’m not sure at this point anybody does.”
