Florida Gov. Rick Scott said Tuesday that President Obama has not yet called him following Sunday’s deadly shooting in Orlando.
“He has not called us,” the Republican governor said on “Fox and Friends” Tuesday. “A staffer has called, but no, he has not called.”
Scott said he has spoken with former President George W. Bush and presumed Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
Scott, who has endorsed Trump’s presidential campaign, also called upon the country to take a tougher stance against the Islamic State, and asked when Obama will say “we are absolutely going to destroy ISIS.”
“The Second Amendment didn’t kill anybody. Evil, radical Islam, ISIS, they killed,” Scott said. “We have to start standing up for our country. We have to say, we’re going to vet people before they come into our country. If you disagree with what our country believes in, why in the living daylights are you allowed in our country?”
Pam Bondi, Florida’s Attorney General since 2011, also confirmed that the president has not contacted her.
“He has had no contact with me, nor do I believe he has contacted our governor at all,” Bondi said on Fox News. “No contact with the White House. … This isn’t about politics right now. This is about Americans. I believe he should have reached out to the governor of Florida.”
She added that she would “be glad” to meet with Obama. According to Bondi, state officials are working with “boots on the ground” in Orlando, like FBI and ATF agents.
Obama is slated to visit Orlando Thursday in the wake of Sunday’s attack at Pulse nightclub, which left 49 dead and 53 others injured in the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.
