NEW YORK (AP) — An audit by New York City’s comptroller’s office found that an agency that provided shelter after Superstorm Sandy paid contractors for ineligible expenses and services that weren’t delivered.
It says mismanagement of contracts by the Department of Homeless Services in the wake of the storm “made the city vulnerable to waste, fraud and abuse.”
Comptroller Scott Stringer says the agency gave out $19.9 million in emergency contracts to various organizations without adequate oversight.
The audit made a number of recommends to the DHS to address the oversight and monitoring of emergency contracts.
The DHS told the Wall Street Journal it was committed to improving all services, including its response to emergencies.
