Report: Ill. Gov. Rauner to skip convention, won’t endorse Trump

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner will skip the GOP convention in Cleveland and decline to endorse Donald Trump, according to the Associated Press.

Rauner joins a growing list of elected Republicans boycotting this summer’s convention after Trump became the party’s presumptive nominee, including Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk, who faces a tough re-election fight in 2016. The governor may have made the decision with his own re-election in mind, as his decision represents a stark departure from March when he said he intended to do everything he could to support the Republican nominee.

Trump won the Illinois Republican primary with 39 percent of the vote, and is projected to earn 54 delegates, which is approximately 78 percent of the state’s delegation to the Republican National Convention.

No living GOP president or Republican who has received the party’s presidential nomination this century plans to attend this summer’s convention.
