Rudolph’s pal ‘Hermey the Elf’ gets his dentist’s degree after 50 years

This is the 50th anniversary of the Christmas TV special “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” and to honor the classic program narrated by the late Burl Ives, the nation’s dentists have given Hermey the Elf a dental degree.

The American Dental Association said they granted Hermey a “DDG,” or “Dental Do Gooder” certificate.

“Hermey’s passion for dentistry, coupled with his devotion to helping others feel good about themselves inside and out, deserves recognition,” said ADA President Maxine Feinberg.

”I know Hermey the Elf, DDG, will continue to inspire young people and those who are young at heart to follow their dreams,” she added.

Most will recall that he was cast out as a misfit toy maker because of his interest in dentistry. But he became one of Santa’s heroes when he yanked the teeth out of the Abominable Snow Monster.

This month the cast of the show was put on U.S. Postal Service stamps, and Hermey got one of his own.
