President Trump said that Ilhan Omar is “lucky to be where she is” while speaking to reporters in the Oval Office Friday afternoon.
The president’s comments about the Democratic Minnesota representative come amid a weeklong feud that has seen him target her and three other freshmen liberal congresswomen. Trump began the feud last weekend when he suggested that they could go back to their home countries if they were unhappy in the United States.
The ongoing saga between the four congresswomen and the president reached new heights on Wednesday when the crowd at Trump’s North Carolina rally Wednesday chanted “send her back” when the president mentioned Omar. She came the country during childhood as a refugee with her family who fled Somalia.
“I’m unhappy with the fact that a congresswoman, in this case a different congresswoman, can call our country and our people garbage. That’s what I’m unhappy with. Those people in North Carolina, that stadium was packed. It was a record crowd and I could have filled it ten times, as you know,” Trump began.
The president continued, “Those are incredible people. Those are incredible patriots. But I’m unhappy when a congresswoman goes and says I’m going to be the president’s nightmare. She’s going to be the president’s nightmare. She’s lucky to be where she is, let me tell you. And the things that she has said are a disgrace to our country. Thank you very much, everybody.”
Trump’s comments appear to differ from statements he made on Thursday about the crowd at his rally. He said on Thursday that he “was not happy with it” and that he disagrees with it.
