House Speaker Paul Ryan on Tuesday called for the United States to seek a new free trade agreement with the United Kingdom once it formally separates from the European Union.
“We need to emphasize that they are our indispensable ally, we have a special relationship, and I think that does mean we should have a trade agreement with England — with Great Britain,” the Wisconsin Republican told Milwaukee’s WISN radio.
Getting a new, smooth U.S.-U.K. trade agreement would help with both economies, he said.
“We need to show our solidarity,” Ryan added. “Obviously it takes time to do something like this, but I think it is something we should be working on.”
Ryan also echoed previous calls of Britain as the U.S.’s “indispensable ally.”
The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership is being negotiated between the U.S. and the EU, but could be in jeopardy following the U.K.’s vote to leave the EU.
