Assembly race hinges on provisional ballots

Democratic newcomer Todd Schuler said he is “cautiously optimistic” that uncounted provisional ballots in Baltimore County will cinch his General Assembly victory.

In one of the few remaining undecided races in the state, only 96 votes separated Schuler and Democrat Ruth Baisden Tuesday in their race to represent the county?s 8th District in the House of Delegates.

Board of Elections Deputy Director Katie Brown said the county is still processing about 6,600 provisional ballots ? 800 from the 8th District ? not including ballots received from overseas that will be counted Friday.

“There?s enough to make a difference,” she said.

Incumbent Del. Eric Bromwell, a Democrat, secured a second term with the most votes in a tight race for the split district that covers portions of Parkville, Perry Hall and Rosedale. Republican incumbent Joe Boteler overcame a deficit after the first count, but recovered enough votes from absentee ballots to also win a second term.

Absentee ballots also determined a second term for Republican incumbent Del. William Frank in the county?s 42nd district. Republican incumbent Sue Aumann and Democratic newcomer Steve Lafferty also won seats.
