Maryland Guard unit returns

The Maryland National Guard plans to welcome home Saturday about 100 soldiers who served with a military police unit in Iraq during the past year.

The Guard will honor about 80 soldiers of the 290th Military Police Company in the morning at the Parkville armory, 3727 Putty Hill Ave., and another 20 members that afternoon at the Salisbury armory, 28722 Ocean Gateway.

The unit deployed in October 2006 to help with detainee operations in Baghdad.

The camp where the guardsmen worked originally was established in April 2003 by the 115th Military Police Battalion from Salisbury.

Once in Maryland, the guardsmen will begin 90 days of reintegration that includes psychological and physical counseling, as well as help with finances, medical issues and family support.

During that time, the guardsmen will not have to report to any type of Maryland National Guard training or deployment.
