GOP lawmaker: Trump’s comments on Mark Sanford ‘a dazzling display of pettiness and insecurity’

Rep. Justin Amash, R- Mich., doubled down on his disapproval of Trump’s recent criticism of Rep. Mark Sanford, R-S.C., calling the president’s remarks a display of “pettiness and insecurity.”

“House Republicans had front row seats to @POTUS’s dazzling display of pettiness and insecurity. Nobody applauded or laughed. People were disgusted,” Amash tweeted.

Trump called Sanford a “nasty guy” on Tuesday during a meeting with congressional Republicans.

Following the meeting, Amash called the remarks “a classless cheap shot.”

This wasn’t the first time the president had criticized Sanford; last week Trump attacked the Republican lawmaker on Twitter just hours before polls closed in his district.

“Mark Sanford has been very unhelpful to me in my campaign to MAGA. He is MIA and nothing but trouble. He is better off in Argentina,” Trump tweeted. “I fully endorse Katie Arrington for Congress in SC, a state I love. She is tough on crime and will continue our fight to lower taxes. VOTE Katie!”

Sanford lost in the primary to state Rep. Katie Arrington. The South Carolina congressman said he lost his bid because he failed to be “Trump enough.”

“People are running for cover because they don’t want to be on the losing side of a presidential tweet,” Sanford told NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday. “The idea that you can’t speak out and say, ‘I disagree with you here, but I agree with you on 90 percent of the stuff’ … is, again, a twilight world that I’ve never seen.”
