On this day, April 18, in 2000, serial killer Robert Yates Jr. was arrested in Spokane, Wash.
Yates, a decorated former Air National Guard helicopter pilot and father of five, confessed to killing 14 people over 25 years. Police connected him to the crimes after finding a button belonging to one of his victims and DNA evidence in a white Corvette Yates once owned.

His first victims were a medical student and his girlfriend on a picnic in 1975. Yates came across the couple while hunting and decided to shoot them.
Most of his victims were picked up from Spokane’s ‘skid row,’ shot in the head with a handgun and dumped in a remote area.
Yates buried the body of one victim in his yard.
He now sits on death row.
