Swords: A bit dull, but fun

It’s time to hack and slash your way through all of your favorite monsters from the Dragon Quest series.

SquareEnix’s “Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors” puts you in the front-row seat for this sword-swinging adventure as you battle to restore order to the kingdom of Avalonia.

The early levels of the game do a fairly good job of teaching you skills you’ll need to fight off the minions of Xiphos the Deathbringer — plus it’s always fun to slice through slimes. The only flaw in the sword fighting is that the diagonal slash doesn’t always attack how you want it to, making some levels very frustrating.

The game is beautifully rendered, giving it almost the same feel as “Dragon Quest VIII.” A rail platform is used in all the levels, minimizing the need for movement controls. However, the controls that work well in the levels do not seem to function as well when you are making your way through town.

Those problems aside, the gameplay is fairly addictive and the power attacks let you act out some devastating special moves to finish off the baddies.
