Former Biden administration nuclear waste official Sam Brinton was arrested on Wednesday on charges of being a “fugitive from justice.”
Montgomery County Police Department spokeswoman Shiera Goff confirmed to the Washington Examiner that Brinton was arrested and that the former Department of Energy official is awaiting an extradition hearing.

“Brinton was arrested in their home on College Parkway,” Goff said. “They are being held in the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit on a no-bond status as they await an extradition hearing.”
Goff also said that the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police “are lead on this” arrest and that Montgomery County Police “assisted in the arrest.”
Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police, who oversee Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Arlington, Virginia, and Washington Dulles International Airport in Dulles, Virginia, confirmed to the Washington Examiner that the arrest was on charges of grand larceny.
“Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police executed a search warrant May 17 in Montgomery County, Maryland, in connection with allegations of stolen property in luggage from Reagan National Airport that was brought to the department’s attention in February 2023. With the assistance of Montgomery County Police, Samuel Otis Brinton, age 35, of Rockville, Maryland, was taken into custody Wednesday pending charges of Grand Larceny,” MWAA Police said in a statement to the Washington Examiner.
Public records show that a hearing for Brinton was scheduled for 1 p.m. on Thursday at Montgomery County District Court after Brinton was arrested on Wednesday.
Brinton, who is nonbinary, was let go from the Department of Energy after Brinton had been accused of stealing luggage from airports by several people.

Brinton was released on no bail for charges in Minnesota relating to an alleged luggage robbery in February and entered a plea deal in a case involving a luggage robbery at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada, in April.
The Washington Examiner reached out to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority for comment.
