Anne Boone-Simanski: Baltimore County?s sitting judges stand up and get served

And served by the very best that is. Last Thursday, Martin Resnick, founder of Martin?s Caterers, and his wife, Thalia, opened up their lovely home to great friends to enjoy some terrific food and show their support of present Baltimore County sitting judges. Oh, did I mention the house?

An impressive crowd for the quartet of judges, Robert E. Cahill, Judith C. Ensor, Timothy J. Martin and Mickey J. Norman, all of whom are in the midst of running for retaining their respective seats on the prestigious bench.

For months, it?s been bull roasts, rotary clubs, festivals, parades, rallies, speeches kinda life for the present sitting judges and their families. But tonight?s event, one of the judge?s told me was “special” because people are spending their hard-earned money to support their election.

According to the Judges Campaign brochure, circuit court judges in the state of Maryland are appointed by the governor, but then must face the voters in the next statewide election.

Under Maryland law, any licensed attorney may file to run against a sitting judge or judges. However, challengers do not go through the screening process that selects the most highly qualified for the governor’s selection. These sitting judges have twice been examined and approved.

“These judges are superbly qualified to continue to serve the citizens of Baltimore County. They are tough but compassionate and always fair,” Gov. Robert Ehrlich told the poolside crowd.

Looking about this grand venue, I spotted Roger and Jane Gookin, Lawrence Julio,of the judges committee, attorney?s James Farmer, Mike Lawlor, John Nowicki and Al Figinski, also Mitchell Goetz, Scott Rollin and Peter Ryan, to name a very few.

As we feasted on the barbecue delights from Martin?s, the always busy Christine Lawlor kept the crowd in order until a table bellowed out, “Get the bouncers” when former Baltimore Colts defensive back, Bruce Laird, walked onto the terrace.

A big ole? Examiner thumbs up to the staff and cooks of Martin?s fortheir wonderful barbecue cookout and of course, to Mr. and Mrs. Resnick. I did mention their home, right?

You be the judge

Many will be clearing their pipes for this Sunday?s competition at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. The Baltimore?s Billie Holiday Vocal Competition will run noon to 5 p.m. My sources say new this year, the competition is open to residents in Delaware, Washington and counties in Virginia and Pennsylvania. So come be a part of this tradition and listen to some pretty talented individuals. I hear “Downtown Kevin Brown” will be a part, so you know it?s going to be lots of fun. For more information, contact the Meyerhoff at 410-783-8000.
