At least five people were killed in D.C.-area crashes this weekend, an unusually high death toll on the region’s roadways.
Pedestrians were killed in three of the crashes; the other deaths were due to one-car accidents. Three crashes happened in Montgomery County, one in Fairfax County and one in Prince George’s County.
The series of fatal crashes began shortly after 4:30 a.m. Saturday, when Byron Hilton, of Temple Hills, was ejected from his 1996 Jeep Cherokee after he drove the vehicle off the roadway on an Interstate 495 exit ramp in Oxon Hill, Maryland State Police said.
Then, shortly before 5 a.m., 59-year-old Rolando Martinez, of Silver Spring, was struck and killed while waiting at a bus stop in Wheaton, according to Montgomery County police.
Three other men died late Saturday or early Sunday from injuries suffered in Saturday-evening crashes.
Fairfax County police said 22-year-old Michael Henly, of Fairfax Station, was killed when he stepped in front of a vehicle while crossing Silverbrook Road near Crosspointe Drive at about 6 p.m.
He was hit by two cars, police said. Both drivers remained at the scene and were not injured. No charges have been filed against either driver.
Another man was killed in Rockville after his vehicle hit a pole and a tree at about 7:45 p.m.
Police said 31-year-old Pablo Fontana’s 2004 Dodge Viper left the roadway on East Gude Drive near Norbeck Road, struck a light pole, overturned and hit a tree.
Police said Fontana died at about 1 a.m. Sunday at Suburban Hospital.
The final crash happened shortly after 10:20 p.m. in Wheaton, when a man tried to cross Veirs Mill Road mid-block between Randolph Road and Gridley Road.
The man was struck by a Chevrolet Monte Carlo, whose driver remained at the scene. He was then hit again by a dark-colored SUV that did not stop, police said. The man died at Holy Cross Hospital at about 12:45 am. Sunday
Police are trying to identify the man. He was Hispanic, between 35- and 50-years-old, 5 feet 4 inches tall, 170 pounds and had black hair and a moustache. Anyone with information about the pedestrian’s identity or the SUV that fled can call police at 301-840-2435.
