City?s lovers get second chance

A midwinter snowstorm may have thrown a cold blanket on the city?s lovebirds on Valentine?s Day, but Mayor Sheila Dixon declared on Thursday that the amorous holiday was far from over.

“I know the snowstorm upset the priorities of the day for many people,” she said at a news conference on Thursday. “But we are going to keep love alive for a few more days.”

Dixon cited the unwieldy mixture of ice and snow as prescription for a holiday disaster for local restaurants. To show her support for the city?s food proprietors, Dixon issued a mayoral proclamation that declared today, Saturday and Sunday “Valentine?s Day weekend.”

Tremont Grand Hotel Executive Chef Dennis Shakan said the inclement weather crippled business.

“We had many cancellations and empty rooms. … I applaud the mayor for her support,” he said as he surveyed the rich buffet of delicacies.

Dixon said that despite the delay, people should make plans to celebrate the holiday with loved ones.

“I urge people to take some time this weekend to show the most important person in their life that they care,” she said.
