George Washington continued its winning ways at the BB&T Classic, fighting off foul trouble, and a nine-point halftime deficit, to hold Virginia Tech to just one field goal in the final six minutes in a 63-62 victory.
“I think it’s huge because we’re a team that’s developing, a team that’s trying to develop a personality,” said Colonials head coach Karl Hobbs. “For us to beat a team like Virginia Tech this early in the season, it’s huge for us.”
The Hokies actually led by one point with 18 seconds remaining, and senior forward Coleman Collins had a chance to seal a victory but missed a dunk. Senior guard Carl Elliott (16 points, seven rebounds, five assists) was fouled and sank two free throws on the ensuing possession to put George Washington ahead for good.
Virginia Tech (4-3) led, 38-29, at the intermission, but despite having two players with three fouls apiece, the Colonials (5-1) went on a 13-0 run to start the second half.
“We didn’t lose the game on the last play of the game, we lost the basketball game in the first four minutes of the second half,” said Hokies head coach Seth Greenberg. “When you have people down, you need to finish them off.”
Sophomore A.D. Vassallo led the Hokies with 16 points and Colonials senior Regis Koundjia had 10 points and 11 rebounds.
