An armed man locked himself in a hotel room of a luxury Honolulu resort Saturday night and Sunday morning, prompting a 10-hour long standoff with local authorities.
Shots were first fired around 6 p.m., and security made their way up to the suspect’s room at the Kahala Hotel & Resort when he allegedly fired at least one shot through the door. The lockdown ended several hours later when SWAT officers entered the room and found the suspect dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
“Thankfully, the security guard wasn’t standing in front of the door,” Capt. Brian Lynch told news outlets.
No one was injured in the incident as police and security scrambled to keep guests and hotel staff safe, according to Lynch.

The suspect, who was alone in his room, is said to be a member of the Navy who lives on Oahu. His military commander reportedly responded to the scene, and members of his family assisted police.
Police cleared the beach and restaurants at the hotel, telling guests and passersby to get inside. Roughly 100 people were ushered into the ballroom, where they remained until late Saturday night. Guests who stayed near the barricaded room were also evacuated, and others were asked to stay in the lobby.
Those who were staying at the hotel recall a chaotic night, with some people reportedly crying inside the ballroom.
“I am completely freaking out,” guest Maggie Marcelli told Hawaii News Now. “There’s been so much horrible stuff that’s been going on, and I’m first of all just scared for whoever this person is. Obviously, there’s something wrong, but also just scared for everyone involved that’s having to go through this.”
