Goodbye, mouthful Metro name?

The U-Street/Cardozo African-American Civil War Memorial Metro station could be getting a shorter name by next summer.

Metro officials are slated to recommend to board members on Thursday to shorten the primary name to U Street/Cardozo.

Other stations would also go by shorter names, according to the recommendations listed in their presentation, though some could get longer. Or at least longer by adding a secondary, smaller printed name under the primary name. For example, Smithsonian could get “National Mall” tacked onto it.

The agency is recommending that any name must be no longer than 19 character. Transfer stations would be even shorter at 13 characters.

Any named landmarks would have to be within walking distance of the stop, though how far one would have to walk wasn’t spelled out in the report.

And no, there shouldn’t be a Burger King Street Station or a Subway Metrorail stop. The naming rights to stations shouldn’t be sold, the agency recommends.
