Fairfax supervisor faces heart surgery

Fairfax County Supervisor Pat Herrity will undergo open-heart surgery to treat an aortic aneurysm next month, the supervisor said in an email.

Herrity, R-Springfield, said he began experiencing abnormal heart rhythms called atrial fibrillation in November, and doctors later discovered an aortic aneurysm.

Herrity will be treated at Inova Fairfax Hospital on April 5, said John Nolan, his spokesman. Nolan said Herrity will be allowed to use a laptop after two days in the hospital and plans to work during his six-day stay there.

“I feel good going into this for a number of very good reasons,” Herrity wrote in his email, citing his faith in his doctors and the high success rate of the procedures he’s undergoing.
