Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., may not be done with politics quite yet.
Webb, who announced in February that he would not seek a second Senate term next year, said Tuesday that he’d stay active even after he leaves office. From the AP:
Greeted at the start of an impromptu media gaggle as “short-timer,” Webb grinned, arched one eyebrow and replied, “Maybe.”
Asked later to elaborate, the Democrat said only that he plans to stay politically involved after 2012 but that “six years in the United States Senate is about right.”
Webb, who had a notably brusque exchange with President George W. Bush over Iraq in 2006, has not exactly toed the party line for President Obama recently, criticizing the administration’s handling of the crisis in Libya this week.
A Vietnam veteran and former Secretary of the Navy under former President Ronald Reagan, Webb has been mentioned as a possible replacement for Defense Secretary Robert Gates. But, as a prolific author in his own right, Webb will certainly not lack for options outside the realm of politics post-2012, either.
