Conservative commentator Ann Coulter said President Trump’s plan to visit the U.S.-Mexico border this week amid a partial government shutdown is “beyond moronic.”
“Trump GOING TO THE BORDER is beyond moronic,” Coulter, a vocal supporter of a border wall, tweeted Monday. “Does he need to meet with a cancer patient before deciding to fund cancer research?”

In a series of tweets, Coulter condemned the decision and compared the trip to “politicians who switch positions on gay marriage after talking to a gay person.” She also questioned what the visit would accomplish and said that Trump must provide a “serious Oval Office speech explaining why a Wall is the only compassionate solution.”
“Border Patrol Agents are the LAST people who should be commenting on the need for a wall: ‘What do you think about us installing an inanimate object that can do your job better than you can?’” Coulter said. “What will Trump GOING TO THE BORDER accomplish? I’ve been to a hospital. That doesn’t make me a doctor.”
Trump is set to deliver a speech on border security Tuesday evening and then will visit the Mexican border on Thursday during the third week of a partial government shutdown impacting approximately 800,000 federal workers. The shutdown stems from a dispute over border wall funding.
Although Trump has long discussed building a border wall and has requested more than $5 billion in funding to build it, Democrats have not gotten on board with the idea.
Coulter said in a recent radio interview she anticipates Trump will “fold in the end” on a spending solution, a move that Trump ally Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., argued would be the “end of his presidency.”
