Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said Wednesday morning that Democrats should not “be rushing to suggest” an impeachment of President Trump.
It would be a “wrenching experience” for the country, the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee told CNN’s “New Day.”
“We need to get to the bottom of what took place,” he said. “What was the president’s intent of doing this? Was he trying to shut down a legitimate prosecution? Was he doing it because ultimately he was worried the trail might lead back to him?”

Schiff said more Republicans are coming out either in support of an independent commission or an independent counsel or both.
“Until we get to that point though, where the GOP leadership decides that their continued obstruction of an independent commission is a political impediment to their other agenda, we’re still gonna have to fight for this,” he said.
Speaker Paul Ryan on Wednesday, after meeting with House GOP members, called for a “close examination” of allegations that Trump tried to pressure Comey to let go of the investigation into former national security adviser Mike Flynn.
Ryan said GOP wants to get more information “before rushing to judgment.” He said there are people “who want to harm the president,” but he still has confidence in Trump.
Republicans have been staying away from news shows amid the growing turmoil due to the White House crisis.
Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, said Wednesday morning that he plans to call for Trump’s impeachment on the House floor. “He has committed an impeachable act and must be charged.”
