The Daily Outrage: That taxpayer money trickles down eventually, right?

WHO: The Defense Department

WHAT: Along with other federal departments, DOD pours billions of dollars into Alaska native corporations to bolster the Alaskan economy and “provide higher quality of life for the indigenous people.” The 75,000 native Alaskans have a stake in the new corporations, which received $29 billion in federal contracts in the past decade, of which more than $16.9 billion came from the Department of Defense.

WHY IT’S AN OUTRAGE: Little if any of that money goes to native Alaskans. Instead, the majority of the contract revenue goes to nonnative executives and contractors who partner with the ANCs. ANC Sitnasuak made a profit of $14.5 million last year. Its shareholders received $305 each, while nonnative executives raked in million-dollar salaries.

WHERE TO VENT: Department of Defense inspector general, 800-424-9098.
