House Democratic Caucus Chairman Joe Crowley, N.Y., and dozens of other Democrats are asking Attorney General Jeff Sessions to recuse himself from any probe into Russia’s possible involvement with the Trump administration and President Trump.
“We are deeply concerned by allegations that former National Security Advisor Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn and individuals employed by Donald Trump’s presidential campaign engaged in improper contact with Russian government and intelligence officials prior to the election and/or during the transition,” the House Democrats wrote in a letter to Sessions.
“A thorough investigation is needed into these potential security violations and the effects of foreign influence,” they wrote. “However, given your role as a leading advisor to the Trump campaign who worked with many of those now possibly under investigation, we urge you to recuse yourself from this matter.”
Senate Democrats have also called Sessions to recuse himself.
Democrats are also calling on Congress to create an independent, bipartisan, bicameral commission to investigate Russian interference in the presidential election, and potential improper or compromising contacts between Trump administration officials and Moscow in the wake of allegations that Flynn discussed U.S. sanctions against Russia with Moscow U.S. ambassador before Trump took office.
Rep. Walter Jones, R-N.C., on Friday became the first House Republican to agree that a 9/11 style commission is necessary to investigate Russia. He became a co-sponsor of the Protecting Our Democracy Act, introduced by Reps. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., and Eric Swallwell, D-Calif.
