Arrest made in hit-and-run homicide

Police have arrested and charged a Baltimore man with the hit-and-run homicide of a 65-year-old man in March.

Baltimore police say Montay Jackson, 35, ran over Charles Erdman in the 5800 block of Erdman Avenue after Erdman attempted to exchange information with him after a minor fender bender.

Erdman died six days later and the medical examiner ruled his death a homicide.

Members of the multijurisdictional Warrant Apprehension Task Force were staking out Jackson?s house in the 600 block of Yale Avenue Monday when he walked out of the home and was arrested, said Agent Donny Moses, a Baltimore police spokesman. Police had obtained a warrant for Jackson?s arrest on a first-degree murder charge Sept. 17, court records show.

Jackson, whose Ford Explorer had stolen tags, got into a fender bender with Erdman in the parking lot of Urban Auto Parts on March 3, according to charging documents.

Jackson “became agitated and stated he had to go,” Homicide Det. Frank Miller wrote in his report. “… Mr. Erdman requested the information again and the driver stated he had to go get it and he got back in the Ford Explorer and started to pull off. Mr. Erdman, who was already in front of the Ford Explorer, put his hands up and requested the driver to stop again. At that time, the driver of the Explorer accelerated striking Mr. Erdman with the truck.”

As Jackson ran over Erdman, Erdman?s vest became caught on the undercarriage of the sport utility vehicle, causing him to be dragged underneath it, police said.

An employee of Urban Auto Parts screamed “Stop! Please stop!” and Jackson halted, opened his door and looked under the car at Erdman. Jackson then accelerated again, running Erdman “completely over,” according to charging documents.

During their investigation, police received a letter that identified Jackson by name. Jackson?s picture was picked out of a photographic array by a witness whom police said they will produce at trial.
