Fairfax County police said Tuesday that two men have been charged with involuntary manslaughter in separate fatal crashes that happened earlier this year.

Police said 21-year-old Joseph Shuttleworth, of Alexandria, was charged in an alleged drunk-driving crash that killed his passenger, Adrian Cardozo, 21, on Feb. 15. The crash happened at about 2:10 a.m. on Franconia Road near Guilford Drive when Suttleworth struck a utility pole after driving around a curve at a high speed, police said.

Cardozo was taken to a hospital, where he died on Feb. 19. Shuttleworth has also been charged with drunk driving.

In a separate incident, 27-year-old Carlos E. Portillo has been charged with manslaughter in a Feb. 9 crash in the Lorton area that killed 57-year-old Sharon Parish. Police said Parish was turning onto Henderson Road from Ox Road when her BMW was struck by Portillo’s Chevrolet. She was pronounched dead at the scene.

Speed was a factor in that crash, but alcohol was not, police said.
