And the award for most creative solution to stop school shootings goes to: replacing armed guards with armed actors in schools.
Both “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” and “The Colbert Report” recently ridiculed actor Steven Seagal for training volunteer school guards in school shooting simulations.
Seagal is a trained weapons expert, as well as an actor, and last weekend at an Arizona school near Phoenix, he was tasked to teach volunteer armed posses what to do if a gunman stepped foot onto a school campus.
Host Stephen Colbert mocked the exercise on his show Tuesday night, stating, “The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is an even worse actor.”
Comedian Lewis Black, who regularly appears on the “The Daily Show” asked “What could possibly go right?” in this situation on Tuesday’s “The Daily Show” broadcast.
The two comedians also played off of Arizona Democrat Chad Campbell’s comments on Seagal’s training sessions. The state representative sarcastically asked, “Why don’t we also have Clint Eastwood, Chuck Norris, and Bruce Willis come out and train them too while we’re at it?”
Black admired Campbell’s solid point and demanded to know why we were “asking random celebrities about this issue anyway when we should be asking more qualified people–our action heroes.”
The two comedians also commented on the hypocrisy of actors speaking out against gun violence who act in films with gun violence.
Colbert said, “We know Hollywood violence is the real problem therefore it is also the solution,” and Black facetiously called celebrities “our foremost experts on the subject.”
But Black did concede that actors are a “pleasant distraction from the fact that our actual lawmakers aren’t doing s*** about this problem.”
