‘Not in his usual character’: Andrew Cuomo says Trump asks how brother Chris is doing after coronavirus diagnosis

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he does not believe President Trump wishes ill will on his brother and CNN host Chris Cuomo, who was recently diagnosed with the coronavirus.

On his radio show Monday, Howard Stern asked the governor whether he thought Trump was “happy” that his brother has the coronavirus given that he works for CNN, which Trump frequently derides as “fake news.”

“He can be vicious and attack. Again, he is a New Yorker, right? And he has felt the sharp end of the spears in New York and he can attack,” the Democratic governor said. “He has a — what’s a nice word for it? He has a confrontational relationship with my brother. He would say that Chris on CNN attacks him, and CNN always attacks him. And he has personally attacked my brother, partially because of me, I think, and partially because of my brother’s reporting.”

“So, that is what it is. I do not believe, I’ll say this, the president always makes a point of saying to me, ‘How is Chris, is he doing OK?’ And that’s not in his usual character,” he continued. “So, I don’t think that. I think a part of it is genuine personal feeling of anger and part of it is a little theater that goes with politics.”

Gov. Cuomo and Trump have spoken throughout the coronavirus pandemic, with both publicly praising each other during the crisis.
