John Legend says donating to Democrats trying to win Senate ‘far more impactful’ than food bank donations

Singer John Legend tweeted Thursday that a donation to Democratic Senate campaigns in Georgia would be “far more impactful” than donating to a food bank.

“I get that politics is annoying and contentious, but the bottom line is that the Senate flipping would be far more impactful than a food bank donation,” Legend said in response to a tweet from billionaire businessman Mark Cuban calling for donations to feed the hungry. “We need massive stimulus and aid to individuals and small businesses. Government needs to do this. Charity isn’t sufficient”

It is estimated that more than 35 million people in the United States struggled with hunger in 2019, and over 14 million households were “food insecure” in 2018.

Legend and his wife, model Chrissy Teigen, have been vocal supporters of the Democratic Party in the past as well as strident critics of President Trump.

Legend suggested earlier this year that Americans should explore leaving the U.S. in order to find a true democracy if Trump were to win reelection.

The balance of power in the Senate rests on two runoff Senate elections in the Peach State in January. Republican Sens. Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue are facing off against Democratic challengers Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, respectively.

The races are expected to be one of the most, if not the most, expensive races in congressional history, with Democrats needing two victories to control the Senate via a tiebreaking vote held by Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.
