House Minority Whip Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Md., on Thursday offered a brief condemnation of Democratic lawmakers for heckling President Trump during his visit to Capitol Hill to meet with congressional Republicans about immigration reform.
“I think that’s not appropriate but having said that there are very strong feelings,” Hoyer said during an interview on CNN’s “At This Hour.” “And nobody engenders stronger feelings and says worse things or acts in a more confrontational manner than the President of the United States. That does not, however, justify us following suit.”
On Tuesday, Democratic members of Congress waved placards and yelled at Trump as he walked through the corridors of the U.S. Capitol.
“Quit separating the kids, they’re separating the children. Mr. President, don’t you have kids?” one lawmaker bellowed.
An unidentified woman, believed to be an intern, was also caught on tape saying, “Mr. President, fuck you!” as Trump arrived at the Capitol Building.
Hoyer added on Thursday that his colleagues should have sought “some other venue to make those points.”
Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order to end the practice of taking children away from parents or guardians accused of illegally crossing the border. All illegal immigrant adults were being prosecuted by the Justice Department as part of Trump’s zero tolerance policy.
