NEW YORK (AP) — Former Buffalo congresswoman Kathy Hochul has beaten back a challenge from Tim Wu to win the Democratic primary for New York lieutenant governor.
With 95 percent of precincts reporting late Tuesday, Hochul had 60 percent of the vote to 40 percent for Wu.
Hochul served a single term in the U.S. House and was working as a bank vice president when Gov. Andrew Cuomo tapped her to be his running mate.
Wu, a Columbia University law professor, had criticized Hochul as being too conservative. Hochul has vowed to work to represent western New York and continue Cuomo’s efforts to boost the region’s economy.
Incumbent Lt. Gov. Robert Duffy is not seeking another term.
Hochul and Cuomo will run together in the fall and face Republican gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino and his running mate, Chemung County Sheriff Chris Moss.
