Deputy U.S. Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said Monday President Trump has honored the rule of law through the judicial nominations and Justice Department appointments made by the president.
In remarks commemorating Constitution Day provided by the Justice Department, Rosenstein praised Trump.
“[I]f we permit the rule of law to erode because it does not directly harm our personal interests, the erosion may eventually consume us as well,” Rosenstein said. “The rule of law is not self-executing. If it collapses — if the people lose faith in the rule of law — then everyone will suffer.”
He continued, “President Trump honors that principle by nominating judges who ‘administer justice without respect to persons,’ and by appointing Department of Justice officials who support the rule of law.”
Rosenstein has oversight over the Russia investigation because Attorney General Jeff Sessions has recused himself. Rosenstein made no mention of the Russia investigation in the prepared remarks, and cited Sessions’ recent remarks regarding how strengthening the rule of law benefits the nation.
