‘Still kind of processing’: Chris Rock responds to Will Smith’s Oscars slap

Comedian Chris Rock shared that he is still processing what happened Sunday night at the 94th Academy Awards when actor Will Smith slapped him onstage.

Rock revealed during his stand-up comedy show, his first public appearance since the slap, in Boston on Wednesday that he had not prepared material about the incident, adding that he would talk about what happened at some point in the future, according to Variety.

“I’m still kind of processing what happened,” Rock told the audience. “So at some point, I’ll talk about that s***. And it will be serious and funny.”

Smith slapped Rock in the face during the awards show as he was presenting the nominees for best documentary, at which point he made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who has alopecia, having a shaved head.

“Jada, I love you. G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it,” Rock quipped. Smith initially appeared to laugh at the joke, while Pinkett Smith appeared irritated. Moments later, Smith took to the stage and slapped Rock. Once back in his seat, Smith told Rock to keep his wife’s name out of his “f****** mouth.”

“Wow, Will Smith just smacked the s*** out of me,” Rock, stunned, said before continuing with the show. Shortly after the slap, Smith won best actor for his role in King Richard, which tells the story of the father of tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Monday that it was investigating the incident and condemned Smith’s actions. Hours later, Smith released a written statement apologizing to Rock in which he said that he had been out of line and wrong to hit him.

Rock has not filed a police report, though the slap has left people divided on how to respond, with some raising the idea of revoking Smith’s award.

The academy said Wednesday that it had initiated disciplinary proceedings to discuss possible consequences for Smith.
