On this day, July 14, in 1986, Motley Crue’s Vince Neil began a 30-day sentence for vehicular homicide.
On Dec. 8, 1984, the flamboyant lead singer was drunk when he crashed his sports car head-on into a Volkswagen in Redondo Beach, Calif. The fiery crash killed his passenger, Nicholas Dingley, 24, a drummer for Finnish band Hanoi Rocks. Neil was sentenced to serve 30 days in jail, pay $2.6 million in restitution and do 200 hours of community service.
Motley Crue dedicated its next album, “Theatre of Pain,” to Dingley: “To all Crue Fans: If and/or when you drink — Don’t take the wheel. Live and learn.”
Earlier this year, Neil was convicted of drunken driving in Las Vegas and was sentenced to two weeks in jail.
