Former Congresswoman Katie Hill accused President Trump of killing top Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani to distract from his looming Senate impeachment trial.
“A lot of us have been wondering for a long time now if @realDonaldTrump was going to try to start a war to distract from impeachment,” the California Democrat wrote on Twitter. “With his trial heading to the Senate imminently, we’ve got our answer, folks.”
Soleimani and Iraqi militia leader Abu Mahdi al Muhandis were killed in strikes outside the Baghdad International Airport on Thursday.
The House of Representatives impeached Trump, 73, in December on two articles: obstruction of Congress and abuse of power. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said she would not send the articles to the Senate for a trial until she receives fair trial terms from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Hill, 32, resigned from Congress as an ethics investigation was being conducted into nude photos that showed her smoking a marijuana bong and allegations that she had an affair with a legislative aide.
In an opinion piece penned after her resignation, Hill said she contemplated suicide and likened her situation to that of former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch during the House Intelligence Committee investigation of Trump.
