Top senator: Obama’s refugee policies aren’t keeping out terrorists

A top Senate Republican echoed concerns made by House Homeland Security Chairman Michael McCaul earlier Friday that the Obama administration’s refugee policies have continually failed to protect Americans.

Following a conversation with a Department of Homeland Security official about two men who posed as refugees to enter the U.S. but engaged in terrorist activity once in the country, Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley said he has doubts the White House’s policies can thwart these criminals.

“The Obama administration keeps assuring the American people that they have nothing to worry about because the screening process for refugees from countries that harbor terrorists is tough and secure. Yet, we continue to see clear examples of the inadequate checks on people being resettled in the United States as refugees,” Grassley wrote in a statement Friday evening.

The senator, who has previously called for stronger screening procedures, doubled down on his message to temporarily suspend the admitting of refugees from countries that are terrorist havens.

Securing the homeland is the “tallest of tasks for U.S. law enforcement and immigration officials because it only takes one mistake to wreak havoc on our country,” Grassley said.
