Sanders: Clinton emails a factor for superdelegates

Everyone in America” is thinking about Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server, including the Democratic National Convention superdelegates who could swing the presidential nomination, according to her rival Sen. Bernie Sanders.

“Everybody in America is keeping it in mind and certainly the superdelegates are,” Sanders said in an interview with “Face the Nation” that aired Sunday morning.

Sanders seems to regard the email scandal as his last best shot to upset Clinton in the presidential primaries, despite his famous refusal to attack her over the issue at one of the early Democratic debates. He has talked about it repeatedly in recent days, even entertaining the possibility that she’ll be indicted, although he hesitates to criticize her about the issue directly.

Clinton’s email troubles were compounded this week when a State Department watchdog reported that she had violated federal record-keeping policies by using a private email account — and a personal server — to conduct all of her government work as secretary of state. The inspector general also noted that Clinton and her top aides refused to cooperate with investigators.

“It was not a good report for Secretary Clinton, that is something that the American people, Democrats and delegates are going to have to take a hard look at,” Sanders said. “But for me, right now, I continue to focus on how we can rebuild a disappearing middle class, deal with poverty, guarantee health care to all of our people as a right.”

Sanders also made a more conventional argument against Clinton, saying that she might not be able to inspire enough Democrats to vote in order to beat Donald Trump. “Republicans win when the voter turnout is low,” he said. “Frankly, I don’t know that Secretary Clinton’s campaign can create a high voter turnout.”
