Stephen Colbert observed Monday night that some of President Obama’s recent comments on ISIS and Iraq seem a little familiar.
On “60 Minutes” Sunday, asked how ISIS managed to gain control of so much territory, Obama blamed Director of National Intelligence James Clapper: “Jim Clappper has acknowledged that I think they underestimated what had been taking place in Syria.”

“Excuse me, sir,” fumed Colbert, “bombing the Middle East and then throwing the CIA under the bus is kind of George Bush’s thing.”
Colbert played a clip of former President Bush in 2005 admitting, “It is true that much of the intelligence turned out to be wrong.”
“Yes, much of the intelligence turned out to be wrong,” Colbert joked, “but not all of it. There was a country called Iraq—it will be missed.”
But, Colbert noted, this wasn’t the first instance of Bush plagiarism by Obama.
Colbert played a roll of TV personalities remarking on how Bush-like Obama’s speech at the U.N. General Assembly (or as Colbert appropriately dubbed it, the annual U.N. traffic festival), sounded, as he warned that the United States would dismantle the terrorists’ “network of death” with the help of a broad coalition.
“Clearly President Kumbaya is just trying to look tough in the Middle East by mad-libbing the president’s greatest hits,” Colbert surmised.
