Jim Williams: High school hoops on RISE in locally hosted tourney

One of the most prestigious high school basketball tournaments will be held in the Washington D.C. area. The ESPN RISE National High School Invitational is returning to Georgetown Prep, where the tournament was launched back in 2009. “We are happy to be back in the nation’s capitol with this tournament, and we feel it is a great way to showcase high school basketball as well as the fine young men and women who play the game,” said James Brown Jr., senior vice president of ESPN RISE. “We are so very glad that Georgetown Prep is playing host again.”

Brown oversees the company’s cross-platform high school initiatives and is a proud graduate of the University of Maryland.

“We have invited the high school class presidents and the sports editors from each team’s newspapers,” he said. “So the young politicians will get a great chance to visit Washington as well as get a better idea on how government works. Meanwhile, the sports editors will be blogging live from the tournament, giving them some great experience as well. They will also have a chance to visit some media outlets while in town so it is a really fun and worthwhile experience for all involved.”

All the games will be televised on the ESPN family of networks, and there will be a strong local flavor in the teams from both the boys and girls brackets — including Montrose Christian (boys) and Riverdale Baptist (girls).
