Democratic Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe found himself in an “uh-oh” moment following a sit-down with country music legend and pro-marijuana activist Willie Nelson and a can of weed.
A photograph of their meetup posted to social media Saturday by Nelson’s wife Annie, has Nelson, who was in Bristow, Va., for a concert, and McAuliffe. The governor can be seen in Nelson’s bus sitting next to a can of “Willie’s Reserve,” the singer’s personal brand of marijuana, which is illegal in the state of Virginia. The product can be purchased in states like Colorado and Washington, where recreational marijuana has been legalized.
In her tweet Annie Nelson didn’t mention the pot, but her caption is telling: “UH-OH Trouble!” She also said “One of them did not imbibe-guess which one!!!”

A spokesman for McAuliffe told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that the governor opposes the legalization of marijuana and stressed that he “had no idea” what was on the table beside him. “He was not and still is not aware of whatever was on the table or anywhere around him and wouldn’t know marijuana or related paraphernalia if it walked up and shook his hand,” said spokesman Brian Coy, adding, “He’s cool, but he’s not that cool.”
Coy said McAuliffe has “never touched a drug in his life.”
